Local Government Week 2009
Local Government Week 2009
Local Government Week (LGWeek) 2009 will be held from Monday 1 June to Sunday 7 June 2009. The theme is “Switched on Councils! Powering Queensland Communities into Sustainability”.
Climate change affects us all and has implications for every country on the planet. In Queensland, climate change has impacts for every community, household, business and farm. Equally, Queensland's unique environment, including icons like the Great Barrier Reef and the Wet Tropics, are at risk with a potential decline in tourism benefits and biodiversity.
Every Queenslander has a role to play in minimising climate change impacts and adapting for the future.
Governments, industries, communities and organisations across Queensland need to work in partnership to better understand the impacts of increasing greenhouse gas concentrations and the implications for climate change.
Better understanding of climate change will continue to assist the world to develop measures to help deal with our changing climate.
Queensland councils are increasingly demonstrating world class sustainable initiatives which aid in the reduction of our impact on the environment. This year Local Government Week aims to showcase the partnerships, the activities, and the behavioural changes Councils have driven to lead our communities in sustainable practices. As an individual we can do a lot, as a community we can change the world….
Purpose
Local Government Week (LGWeek) is a state-wide annual event, which provides an opportunity for councils to promote a greater awareness and understanding of local government and to showcase the people, local facilities and services that shape councils.
The aim of LGWeek is: to inform and educate the community of the roles and responsibilities of the sphere of local government in Queensland.
History
LGWeek is now in its eleventh year and has been greatly supported by councils throughout Queensland. LGWeek over the years has topically focused on councils’ role in the community through themes such as Community Engagement and Building our Communities.
